What to expect at your first sound bath session

By Montse Terradas · Práctica Vibracional Barcelona

I remember the first time someone asked me: "But what's actually going to happen in there?" She was a curious woman, eager to try something different, but carrying that mix of excitement and hesitation that shows up when we approach the unknown. I told her the same thing I'm telling you now: there's no right way to live this experience. Whatever comes up will be valid.

How I welcome you

When you arrive for the first time, I welcome you into the space and help you get comfortable according to what you need. I gently invite you to be present, without doing anything more than allowing yourself to feel. At any moment, you can move, open your eyes, change position, or sit up if you need to. There are no rules or expectations.

If you're wondering how to prepare before coming, I have an article where I cover the practical details.

The space

It's usually a clean, harmonious place where the sound instruments are arranged in the centre and participants settle around them. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a comfortable temperature and soft lighting, often accompanied by candles. It's a space designed so your body feels safe and can let go.

The instruments and the sound journey

A typical session uses Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, wind chimes, gongs, drums, and more tribal instruments. The order varies from session to session, but there's always a gradual flow — a gentle, progressive rhythm that unfolds little by little.

How a session is structured

A session lasts approximately one hour and is structured around three main moments:

Welcome and arrival

At the beginning, I offer you a personal welcome so you can settle in. Then there's a brief group introduction where I explain simply what the session involves, and I guide a short relaxation to ease you into a state of receptive listening.

The sound experience

It unfolds progressively, with a gentle, enveloping rhythm that invites relaxation and inner listening. The instruments come in following an order that isn't fixed — it adapts to the group and the moment.

Return and closing

At the end, I gradually guide the return through my voice, helping you reconnect with your surroundings little by little. You're invited to sit up at your own pace, moving your body if needed. Before closing, space is held in case anyone wants to share their experience.

What people feel afterwards

The most common feeling is surprise: surprise at the sound's ability to meet each person exactly where they are — whether that means mental clarity, physical wellbeing, or deep relaxation. Many people are amazed at how vibration can connect them with specific elements or moments from their inner world.

If you want to learn more about what happens in your body after a session, I explain it in detail.

Laura's story

Laura is a very cerebral person, with a strong tendency toward control, yet pragmatic and grounded. She was surprised to discover that during the session she'd been able to — as she put it — "switch off the head," connecting with a less rational part of herself than she'd expected. For her, being able to quiet that mental channel and allow others to activate was a moment of great openness and trust. A realisation about her own capacity to loosen up, trust, and surrender.

If you're curious but feeling a bit hesitant

It's perfectly normal to feel curious and slightly hesitant at the same time about something new. You don't have to come "in a certain way" or know how you're going to feel. You can simply give yourself permission to try, without demands.

During the session there's nothing to do or achieve. You can participate at your own pace, pause when you need to, move, open your eyes, or even not engage more than you feel like. Everything is valid.

Many people arrive with doubts and discover that having no expectations is precisely what allows them to live the experience more freely and surprisingly. This is a practice, not a therapy — and that distinction frees you from any pressure.
